‘Israel - A Concise History of a Nation Reborn’ - A Book Review

It was said by Haruki Murakami, (A popular contemporary Japanese writer), Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World that:

“Now for a good twelve-hour sleep, I told myself. Twelve solid hours. Let birds sing, let people go to work. Somewhere out there, a volcano might blow, Israeli commandos might decimate a Palestinian village. I couldn't stop it. I was going to sleep.”

Israel is one of the nations which needs appreciation for its very innovative technologies and culture, say it be water mechanics, innovations in defense, military equipment, art and architecture and many other categories.

World War II had seen so many destructions and changes of maps. However, amongst all these chaos, Israel continues to function in a democratic manner, till today. Imagine a state created out of nothing. As per the book, the Jew community created an empire out of the ramshackle of their existence during World War II. Any type of war brings undue misery to the ordinary souls. The querulousness of Hitler about Jews and the consequence of an ineluctable pain and sufferings due to extreme hatred eerie’ s even the hard hearted souls.

The genealogy of hatred by many European Countries in the past, haunted Jew community to join hands during the first Zionist Congress at Basel, Switzerland where they gathered to take history back in their own hands. Theodor Herzi, born as Benjamin Ze'ev Herzl was an Austro-Hungarian Journalist, playwright, Political activist and writer and one of the fathers of modern Zionist Organization in an effort to make a new Jewish State convened the congress:

“We are here,” he opened in German, “to lay the foundation stone of the house which is to shelter the Jewish nation.”

It is a fact that the Jews faced centuries of restrictions and anti Semitism but the achievement they achieved in their country is marvelous and praiseworthy.

The Jews became professionals and intellectuals, leading Scientists and leaders of significant intellectual and social movements. Israel, the only Jewish nation in the world, is a small country on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea. Though the size of the nation is small, the country has played a large role in global affairs. The country has a strong economy, landmarks of significance to several religions and it has some strained relationships with many of its neighbors.

The country is one of the best in many sectors like Drones, Satellites, Education, Inventions in Engineering, Education and Nature. The author also states the fact that Israel is such a tiny country like New Jersey has a population roughly equivalent to that of Los Angeles is a world leader in medical technology.

The book ‘Israel - A Concise History of a Nation Reborn’ written by Daniel Gordis, (born 1959) is an American-born Israeli author and speaker, who is best known as a passionate advocate of Israel. He has written many books and this book about ‘Israel’ is one of them.

The book has a lot of information about the formation of Israel and its struggles, trials and happy moments. However, the author also speaks about the simplicity and nature friendliness of the Israel people through the following words:

‘Even in the high-tech nation that Israel has become, Israelis are still farmers. Israel leads the world in water technology. Hiking the land, from north to south, is still an Israeli passion, for the young as well as for their parents and even grandparents. National parks are filled to capacity on holidays and vacations. Israelis have planted 250 million trees in the past hundred years, and Israel is one of the only two countries in the world that ended the twentieth century with more trees than it had had a century earlier.’

The book does glorify Israel, however it is a fact that may in the world do have other stories to tell:

“People who call themselves supporters of Israel are actually supporters of its moral degeneration and ultimate destruction.”

Noam Chomsky (An American linguist, philosopher, political activist, author, and lecturer)

However, a vivid reader will like reading the book as the author has provided many details with facts. The book is written in a wonderful way and has the ability to hold the concentration of a reader.

I read the book and if I have to rate the book on 10 Stars and 10 being the highest, I will give the book 8 stars.
