Book Review: ‘Surrounded by Sharks’

Have you ever imagined yourself in the midst of an Ocean amidst the blue waters with no land in sight? That sagging with the waves and the cringing of the body in fear of species which dominates the vast water bodies in this planet called ‘Earth’. We have heard stories and seen movies on Shark attacks but imaging oneself in the midst of the oceans circled by Tiger sharks in something which is a horrible nightmare.

The novel written by Michael Northrop, ‘Surrounded by Sharks’ is about a small boy named Davy Tsering who suddenly wakes up in an island and leaves his mom and dad, Pamela and Tam and his brother Brando and went to the beach. He was attracted by the sea or ocean and stepped so far away in the waters that reaching the shore became a distant dream.

Generally, Tiger Sharks are 850 to 1400 pounds and has a size relative to a 6 feet human. These Tiger Sharks are common in tropical and sub-tropical waters throughout the world. Because of the direct sunrays through the year, the temperature of this area is high. Along with this, these regions also receive highest amount of rainfall as evaporation is more.

In the words of the author Michael Northrop,

Galeocerdo Cuvier. The Tiger shark. The distinctive stripes that earned the species its name had faded as this one reached adulthood, but there was a second reason for the name. The Sea tiger was atleast as fearsome a predator as a tiger on land. It was a massive, muscular brute of a fish. It was sometimes called the man-eater shark, but that wasn’t entirely accurate, either. It would eat anything, from sea snakes to sick whales to discarded lunch boxes.

However, they are now listed amongst the near threatened species as they were heavily harvested for their fins, skin and flesh and their livers which contains high levels of vitamin A. This species now needs protection.

While Davy was in the midst of the oceans, he saw the shark coming and circling around him. The author writes in his book:

The shark curved slowly off to the right. He followed it just with his eyes until it reached the edge of the bottle. Then he took a breadth and moved the bottle with his arms, just enough so that he could still see it. At first he thought it was moving away, but as he kept moving the bottle it kept reappearing.
It was moving in a circle. Both of the aquariums he’d been to had sharks. They’d moved in circles, too, but they had no choice. That was the shape of the tanks. This one had a choice.’

This is a very interesting novel written by the author, Michael Northrop, who is a writer living in New York City. He is the author of more than 15 books for young readers, including the multi-platform adventure series. He belongs from Salisbury, Connecticut, a small town in the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains.

If I have to rate the book on 10 Stars and 10 being the highest, I will give the book 8 Stars. A patient reading sometimes do wonders with your life.
