Mastering Your Thought & Mind: A Book Review of 'Energize Your Mind'
In today's world, the mind controls every aspect of our lives. When our minds are disturbed or distracted, we face inner turmoil. While mental turbulence is distressing, negative thoughts overwhelm both the brain and the heart. However, positive thoughts can heal and soothe the mind. It has been observed that a walk in the forest or woods has a therapeutic effect on the intellect. The gentle whisper of the wind helps to steer our thoughts and keep us focused.
This book by Gaur Gopal Das delves into the mind and ways to energize it. In the book, Gopal Das shares his personal journey, including his decision to become a monk and his experiences delivering lectures in his community and across the world. He also discusses how to avoid toxic people and maintain joy in life. Letting go of greed and other negative energies can help recharge the mind.
One of the most interesting parts of the book is an example that rejuvenates the soul, especially his travel to Moscow, Russia. There, a monk presented him with a gift just before his departure. Das was surprised to find a small wooden doll inside the box. The Russian monk explained that it was a Matryoshka or babushka doll, a traditional Russian souvenir symbolizing the feminine, softer side of Russian culture and strong family values. This reminded Das of a beautiful concept about identity from ancient literature taught to him at the beginning of his monastic training.
Reflecting on these thoughts, Gaur Gopal Das beautifully explains the concept of Annamaya Kosha, the sheath of pleasure. He includes the following prayer of gratitude to Mother Earth:
'Samudra vasane devi
Parvata stana mandale
Visnu-patni namas tubhyam
Pada sparsam ksamasva me'
The Sanskrit meaning of this verse is: O Devi (Bhumi Devi), You Who have the Ocean as Your Garments, and Mountains as Your Bosom, O Consort of Lord Vishnu, Salutations to You; Please Forgive my Touch of the Feet (on Earth, which is Your Holy Body).
Das mentions that science has found many benefits to walking barefoot on natural surfaces like soil, sand, or grass and that Mother Earth has its own natural energy, which may have the ability to heal.
He also explains other concepts such as Pranamaya Kosha (the sheath of energy), Manomaya Kosha (the sheath of emotions), Vijnanamaya Kosha (the sheath of wisdom), and Anandamaya Kosha (the sheath of bliss).
Gaur Gopal Das studied electrical engineering at the College of Engineering, Pune. After a brief stint with Hewlett-Packard, he chose to live as a monk in an ashram in downtown Mumbai. He has received several honors, including the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke International Film Festival Award and an honorary doctorate (DLitt) from KIIT University.
This book is full of encouraging content and is likely to enlighten readers. I read the book and, if I were to rate it out of 10 stars, with 10 being the highest, I would give it 9 stars.
