Unveiling the Timeless Charm of Aranyak: A Bengali Book Recommendation

Aranyak is written by the famous writer Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay around the year 1939 based on his years of stay in the districts of Purnea and Bhagalpur in India. This is a story of Satyacharan who did his BA and was based in Kolkata to search for an employment. He was able to get a job at Purnea, which was far away from the urban world. The location of this work was Purnea district, where he need to look after 20 thousand or 30 thousand Bigha land which comprises of jungle and few inhabitants.

If you are a nature lover and want to visualize flora and fauna of the forests, feel an open sky and streams, hear sound of the birds, then I feel that this book is for you. Whenever I read the book, I can imagine myself in the ancient old jungle forest, where one can enjoy the open dust free sky, can hear the reverberation of avian songs, can enjoy the moonlit rays over the leaves, which has the ability to bring solace in human minds.

Aranyak is not just a Bengali novel, it’s about the emotions that bond human and nature. Its not about richness of wealth but about understanding the plight of the poor and their happiness. The long years of stay of Satyacharan and his story, is likely to bring joie de vivre to the minds of readers. The opulence of green forests and the tune of the birds is likely to be a veneration for any Connoisseurs of environment. Through this book, one may visualize the moon embellishing the beauty of the forests. Such is the serenity that even a gobbling sound can have an impact on the hearing nerves and may disturb the calmness and tranquility of the environment.

Many proponents of the book states that Bandopadhyay worked in the villages of Azambad, Fulkia, Lobtulia and Baihar in the state of Bihar, India as an agent for the estate, for overseeing land clearances and also look after local tenants. However, his experience left him and the readers with memorable moments about the poverty of the people which includes peasants, migrant laborers and adivasis.

This book is likely to keep its readers hooked to the content and if I have to rate the book on 10 Stars and 10 being the highest, I will give the book 9 stars.
